Family & Tradition

Barbara Mazzi Pensieroso

I still call myself a girl, despite my 39 years; I was born in Bologna, but I have always lived in Rome. I found myself at the head of this accommodation, partly for fun and partly to find a job where I could finally express myself. Five years ago, I entered in an ancient palace of the 1500s, still only partially inhabited, in which elements of rare beauty - such as hand-painted ceilings with wood rafters, travertine portals, friezes inlaid in the walls - were trying to shine in an environment of total structural decay.
At the time, I had already been working for ten years in a different business sector, and I had never imagined I would embark on this new, fascinating adventure.
Day after day I became passionate about every corner of the Palazzo delle Pietre that was being demolished to then be reborn and to regain its ancient splendour; it took five years to completely restructure the Palazzo: from the foundations to the roof,  passing through moments of crisis due to the structural problems that presented themselves as the demolitions progressed. In those moments I thought of giving up because of the many difficulties that had to be faced and overcome.
Then, fortunately, my personality kicked in and, with the enthusiasm and positivity that have always distinguished me, I started to follow the construction site, taking note of the difficulties which were encountered by every company in its respective operative sector and trying to come up with quick solutions so that the ongoing works could continue. The plans and documents previously unknown to me, had become my daily bread and butter, on which to imagine what would later be.

Carlo Mazzi

He is the creator of all this: born in Arezzo, Milanese in the last 20 working years, he maintains  not only the accent, but also the typical Tuscan irony, sometimes a little bitter, but real, and above all a passion for antiques, for classical Romanism, elements that contribute to making Arezzo a beautiful city worth a visit.
The encounter between my father and the Palace, therefore, could not fail to generate an immediate agreement: the travertine portals already present inside it, the friezes and the doors with ancient inscriptions found behind plasterboard walls, which over the years had been covered, are well integrated with the ancient stones, many of which belonged to my father, who, himself, donated them to the Palazzo, to adorn all its environments. The love for art, and its natural aptitude for rationality and regularity of spaces and ideas, were expressed in the planning of the entire renovation of the building: it is thanks to my father, in fact, that the Palazzo delle Pietre is organised so wisely, that every environment enjoys a great sense of airiness, so that it is always pleasant to stay in any room of the building.

Patrizia Albano

Neapolitan by birth, Roman for the first forty years of her life, now Milanese by adoption, she is the modern and colorful soul of the Palazzo delle Pietre: she has chosen with care and dedication all the fabrics that complete the furnishing of each individual apartment, in harmony with the natural materials of the entire building’s structure. The precious marble floors, which restore contact with an almost forgotten primordial nature, the scent of the wood of the ceiling beams, delicately hand painted and recovered thanks to a long restoration work, dance harmoniously with the curtains and bedspreads that my mother has carefully selected, from large companies, small boutiques, to local markets. With the same love and fun she has chosen the furnishings, confirming the presence of her strong, sparkling and modern personality.

Luca Pensieroso

He is a Professor of Economics at the University of Louvain La Neuve, Belgium, he has been living in Brussels for many years with his wife and their three children. Despite the distance, not only has  he followed and encouraged the project of the Palazzo, sharing in its spirit,  but has also and made valuable suggestions for its realisation, during the numerous family trips to Rome.
